Parliament to Abolish Support Fund - Guarantees Sought for Beneficiaries

Parliament discussed the abolition of the Independent Social Support Fund and the transfer of its responsibilities to the Grants and Subsidies Service of the Ministry of Finance. Members of Parliament requested assurances that all beneficiaries would continue to receive the same support after the Fund's abolition. The Deputy Minister to the President, Irene Piki, stated that a transitional arrangement is planned to process already submitted applications and that an amendment will be submitted to create a special account for donations. Members of Parliament expressed their desire to ensure transparency in the policy of supporting students and requested that the same eligibility criteria be maintained. Ms. Piki assured that the government has already approved the expansion of beneficiaries and that the regulations will soon be available for Parliament's approval. Akel MP Giorgos Loukaidis agreed with the abolition of the Fund due to its negative reputation, but expressed concern about the risk of reduced support for students and limited donations. He requested that the state ensure coverage of the amounts necessary to continue support. The Auditor General of the Republic, Andreas Antoniades, welcomed the bills, assuring that the Fund's financial management was transparent and that its abolition would contribute to improving the efficiency of subsidy provision.
