AKEL Calls for Agriculture Minister's Resignation Amid Foot-and-Mouth Crisis

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, strongly criticized the Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, deeming her “inadequate” in handling crucial issues such as last year's wildfires, water management, and the current foot-and-mouth disease crisis. Mr. Stefanou accused the President of the Republic of “unfathomable insistence” on retaining the minister in her position, emphasizing the necessity of taking political responsibility. Simultaneously, he stressed the need for effective management of the foot-and-mouth disease crisis, proposing specific measures such as avoiding mass culling of animals through an exemption from the relevant EU protocol, geographically limiting the disease, importing animals from abroad, and compensating affected livestock farmers. Mr. Stefanou urged the President to take responsibility, emphasizing that the minister's inadequacy cannot be an excuse for further delays.
