European Parliament Proposes Solutions to Housing Crisis

The European Parliament has approved recommendations to address the housing crisis in the EU, proposing solutions for decent, sustainable and affordable housing. The report highlights that millions of Europeans face precarious living conditions and calls for initiatives to address rising prices and shortages by supporting construction and renovation. The Parliament proposes allocating special funds for renovation and improving the energy efficiency of homes, as well as combating energy poverty. In addition, it calls for new homes to meet high standards of insulation and energy efficiency. Recognizing the increase in short-term rentals, the Parliament calls for legislation that balances tourism development with access to affordable housing. It also proposes increasing public and social housing in EU cities to increase affordability and housing supply for vulnerable groups. The Parliament condemns evictions and calls for stricter measures to protect property owners, while also urging member states to strengthen the protection of tenants' rights. It also proposes tax incentives for low- and middle-income households, as well as simpler licensing procedures to speed up construction and renovation.
