Pame Express Suspension: Driver Shortage and Government Disagreement

Cyprus Public Transport (CPT) is suspending the operation of Pame Express in Nicosia from March 23rd due to a severe shortage of bus drivers. The company's financial director, Tryfonas Chatzichristoforou, emphasized that the problem is not due to salary issues, but a pan-European staff shortage. Despite potential financial burdens, the company sees no other solution, as the number of drivers required for the Pame Express service (around 50) far exceeds the available number (7). Meanwhile, the government, through the head of the Public Passenger Transport Directorate, Andreas Nikiforou, disagrees with the suspension, pointing out that the contract does not allow CPT to make such a decision. The government is asking the company to comply with instructions and find staff, warning of significant clauses in case of contract violation. Mr. Nikiforou states that Cyprus needs to align with European standards, such as the lower age limit for bus drivers (19 years in Europe versus 24 years in Cyprus). CPT maintains that the suspension is unavoidable, even with financial burdens, due to the lack of available personnel. The disagreement between CPT and the government highlights the challenges facing the public transport sector in Cyprus, especially in attracting and retaining staff. The case also highlights the need to harmonize Cypriot legislation with European standards in order to facilitate access to the profession of bus driver.
