Municipalities Outraged by Waste Landfill Tax: Recycling Efforts Hampered

Published February 11, 2026, 09:41

Municipalities in Cyprus are strongly reacting to the imposition of a waste landfill tax, which they consider inappropriate and anti-recycling. The Mayor of Amathous, Kyriakos Xydias, accuses the government of shifting the responsibility for its failure to upgrade infrastructure onto the citizens. He argues that existing facilities are underperforming, leading 80% of waste to landfill instead of recycling. The tax, starting from 10 euros per ton with an annual increase, is being promoted under pressure to disburse European funds, but municipalities characterize the consultation as superficial.
