EU Supports Cyprus with 500,000 Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine Doses

The European Commission has delivered 500,000 doses of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine to the Republic of Cyprus to support vaccination efforts in areas where the government does not have effective control. The vaccines, sourced from the EU vaccine bank, are intended to strengthen immunity in vulnerable livestock populations and reduce the spread of the disease. This initiative aims to protect farmers, animal health, and prevent the virus from spreading to other parts of Cyprus and the wider region. Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease of livestock, with the SAT1 serotype spreading rapidly and posing a risk in areas with low immunity. Vaccination is considered one of the most effective tools for controlling the disease, in combination with other control measures. The European Union, through its antigen bank and emergency support mechanisms, contributes to the rapid response and preparedness for serious cross-border zoonoses. This action is part of this effort, complementing national disease control efforts and reducing regional impacts. The Commission will continue to monitor the epidemiological situation in Cyprus and assess any additional needs to ensure an effective and proportionate response to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
