AKEL Proposes Abolition of Social Support Fund and Increased Student Aid

AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou presented the party's bill regarding the Social Support Fund and student welfare. AKEL proposes the abolition of the Fund and the transfer of its assets and obligations to the Cyprus Scholarship Foundation (IKYK). Regarding student welfare, AKEL proposes a significant increase in the budget for State Student Aid and a revision of the income and asset criteria for granting student grants and allowances, taking into account inflation and the Consumer Price Index. The bill is co-signed by MPs Kyriakos Hatzigiannis and Alexandra Attalidou. Mr. Stefanou explained that the abolition of the Fund is deemed necessary due to the creation of conditions of institutional entanglement, as it operates within the Presidential Palace and is funded by corporate sponsorships. Transferring the responsibilities to the IKYK will ensure transparency and efficiency in supporting disadvantaged students. The bill provides for the abolition of the Fund within three months, allowing it to complete all pending issues regarding students receiving support. AKEL believes that this proposal provides effective answers to the need for institutionalized support for vulnerable youth groups, enabling them to cope with their studies.
