Stefanos Stefanou: Elections are Not a Transfer Market, They are a Critical Political Decision

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, during the presentation of the party's candidates for the 2026 Parliamentary Elections, emphasized that elections are not merely a transfer market or a creation of impressions, but a critical political decision. He stressed that the elections concern important issues for the present and future of society and should be treated with seriousness and political terms. Mr. Stefanou stated that the House of Representatives is not a decorative element, but has a significant role in the approval, rejection, or modification of bills, as well as in the parliamentary control of the government. He warned that the elections should not be considered a simple poll of dissatisfaction, but a political decision that determines which interests will be served. He highlighted the importance of numbers and majorities in Parliament, as these determine the strength of AKEL and its ability to promote policies that benefit society. The stronger AKEL is, the stronger society is within Parliament, he emphasized. Mr. Stefanou referred to examples of AKEL's action, such as the effort to tax the excessive profits of banks and the support of borrowers, highlighting the party's commitment to protecting the interests of citizens.
