Studies on Paper, Work in Practice for Half of Young People in Cyprus

New Eurostat data for 2024 shows that in Cyprus, 56.8% of young people aged 15-34 find employment related to their studies, slightly above the European average of 56.4%. The match between education and work is more successful for university graduates, while those with secondary education face more difficulties. At the European level, health, IT and education show the best match, while arts, humanities and social sciences often lead to professional compromises. The research highlights that the problem does not lie in whether someone studies, but in what they study and where they hope to work. Choosing the right field of study, based on employment prospects, is crucial for professional success. Cyprus, although above the EU average, faces the same challenges as other European countries, such as the need for a better connection between education and the demands of the labor market and the strengthening of career guidance for young people. This data highlights the need for continuous adaptation of educational programs to the needs of the labor market and for providing young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the challenges of the modern working environment.
