Sudan: At Least 28 Dead in Drone Strike on Market

At least 28 people were killed on Sunday when a drone struck a market in North Kordofan, central Sudan. The non-governmental organization Emergency Lawyers, which documents the war in the country, reported that the death toll may rise as there are also dozens of injured. The Kordofan region, rich in oil, is at the center of the three-year conflict between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The market that was attacked was located in an area controlled by the RSF. Emergency Lawyers announced that the attack occurred while many people, mostly women, children and the elderly, were in the market. The organization did not specify which side the drones that carried out the attack belonged to. The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of at least 14 million, creating, according to the UN, “the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.” The RSF have captured the city of El Fasher in Darfur and are now advancing into Kordofan, seeking to control the central road axis connecting Darfur with the capital, Khartoum.
