Concerns Raised Over Chaotic Coordination in Combating Human Trafficking in Cyprus

The House Human Rights Committee expressed strong concern over the coordination in combating human trafficking in Cyprus, following a Channel 4 video highlighting the issue. The Committee President proposed transferring the coordination of the multi-thematic team for combating human trafficking from the Deputy Ministry of Migration to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, as the Deputy Ministry is considered to lack the appropriate jurisdiction. The Police have launched an investigation into the video and have taken testimonies, while noting an increase in operations and convictions in recent years. However, Committee members described the operation of the coordination body as chaotic and ineffective, criticizing its initial subordination to the Deputy Ministry of Migration, a decision that had also provoked reactions from other stakeholders.
