Sexual Abuse Allegations at Central Prisons: Lawyer Calls for Criminal Investigation into Cover-Up

An investigation has begun into allegations of sexual abuse at the Central Prisons, with the testimony of a convicted prisoner who claims to have been a victim of his cellmates. The complainant alleges that the Prison Directorate did not inform the Police about the incidents and forced him to sign a statement that he had no complaints in order to be transferred to another wing. The victim's lawyer, Lito Kariolou, is calling for a criminal investigation into a possible cover-up and has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. The initial investigation had been assigned to an independent criminal investigator, who however withdrew due to a family relationship with a prison guard. The investigation has now been taken over by the president of the Independent Authority for the Investigation of Complaints and Allegations against the Police, Andreas Paschalidis, who is also responsible for the investigation of a video posted online concerning the Director of the President's Office. The Police were informed of the incidents ten days later, by the complainant's uncle. The case was initially investigated by the TAE Nicosia, but after complaints of inadequate investigation, it was returned to the TAE Headquarters. Paschalidis's investigation focuses on the actions or omissions of prison officials and other persons. Charges have been filed against the two cellmates named by the complainant for conspiracy to commit a felony and rape. One of the two is already in prison for another case, while the other was released a few days after the alleged incidents. The Prosecution is seeking to keep him in custody.
