EU Commissioners and Ministers Discuss Key Thematic Areas in Cyprus

The College of European Commissioners held discussions with Cypriot Government Ministers on four thematic areas at the Port of Limassol, within the framework of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Simultaneously, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met privately with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, from defense and security to the economy, digital transition, and social values. The first section focused on a 'Global Union', examining issues such as defense, EU enlargement, support for Ukraine, migration management, and strengthening preparedness and resilience. The second section concerned the prosperity and resilience of the EU, with emphasis on the Multiannual Financial Framework, cohesion policy, health, the environment, and fisheries. The third section discussed competitiveness, digital transformation, and sustainable development, including industrial sustainability, research and innovation, energy security, and sustainable tourism. The fourth section focused on the values of the EU, equality, and opportunities, with emphasis on democracy, the rule of law, human rights, gender equality, and poverty reduction. The choice of the Port of Limassol as the venue for the consultations symbolizes the importance of maritime transport to the EU, while the 'Amalthea' plan highlights Cyprus's role in providing humanitarian aid. The discussions concluded with a plenary session and a joint press conference.
