Critical Dam Levels in Cyprus - Recent Rains Provide Minimal Relief

Dam levels in Cyprus are at a critical point, with recent rainfall contributing very little – only 400,000 cubic meters. January inflows were significantly lower than expected, resulting in an overall fullness of just 11%, compared to 26% during the same period last year. To improve the situation, substantial rainfall is needed in February and March, ideally 100 millimeters over two days. Snowfall helps with water runoff to the dams, but doesn't address the issue of absorption by the dry land. The situation is so severe that Cyprus needs rainfall comparable to that experienced in Attica, Greece, where 150 millimeters fell, while Cyprus received only 19 millimeters.
