Foot-and-Mouth Disease Threatens Cypriot Mouflon: Special Weapons for Remote Vaccinations Incoming

The Game and Fauna Service is on high alert due to the threat of foot-and-mouth disease to mouflon in Cyprus. The problem is exacerbated by the co-grazing of mouflon with livestock in the occupied territories, particularly in the area of the dead zone (Kambos and Kokkinos). The Service is trying to resolve the issue through the United Nations, but the situation remains difficult. To address the threat, the Game Service has ordered special weapons for conducting vaccinations on mouflon from a distance, while vaccinations for mouflon in enclosed areas are also starting. In addition, a complete ban on hunting and dog training has been imposed in areas adjacent to the infected zone of Larnaca. The Forestry Department has announced the closure of protection structures at Stavros tis Psokas and Platanias to the public, in order to limit the possibility of virus transmission through human activity. The situation requires immediate and coordinated action to protect the iconic species of the Cypriot countryside.
