Limassol Mobilizes: Implementing Disinfection Guidelines in Livestock Areas

Following instructions from the Veterinary Services for disinfection, the Municipalities of Kourion, Polemidia and Amathous are mobilizing to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The municipalities are implementing guidelines for disinfection at the entrances and exits of their livestock areas. The Municipality of Kourion has banned access to the Akrotiri meadow, where rare native cows are raised, in order to protect this rare species. Disinfection of livestock areas and zones is being carried out by teams, while tanks with disinfectant liquid are being constructed for vehicles entering and leaving. The Municipality of Kourion is even applying the measure to all its livestock zones, beyond the areas covered by the instructions of the Ministry of Agriculture, in order to support livestock farmers. Livestock farmers express their concern about the situation, as they see their colleagues losing their animals and the work of a lifetime. The Mayor of Kourion intends to request preventive vaccinations from the Minister of Agriculture to protect the animals. The Municipalities of Polemidia and Amathous are following similar measures, constructing disinfection tanks and informing livestock farmers about the ban on moving animals for grazing. The mobilization of the municipalities demonstrates the determination of local authorities to protect livestock and prevent the spread of the disease.
