Actor and Director Found Guilty of Rape and Attempted Rape in Greece

A Mixed Jury Court in Athens found an actor and director guilty of rape and two counts of attempted rape against two young women. The decision was reached by a majority of 4-3. The defendant was granted the mitigating circumstance of good conduct after the act, resulting in a sentence of 4 years imprisonment with suspension pending appeal and a condition of being prohibited from leaving the country. The court unanimously rejected the mitigating circumstance of a law-abiding life that the defendant had requested. The prosecutor had previously proposed the acquittal of the defendant due to doubts. The complainants, one of whom is the sister of a well-known actress, burst into tears immediately after the verdict was announced. The defendant’s wife, who was present throughout the trial, also broke down in tears. The trial began last October, with the defendant denying the charges, claiming that it was a manipulation of the #Metoo movement. The case has caused a stir in the theater community and highlights the seriousness of allegations of sexual violence.
