Russian Ambassador: NATO Buildup Near Cyprus Does Not Guarantee Security

The Russian ambassador to Cyprus, Murat Zyazikov, stated that the increased military presence of NATO in the Eastern Mediterranean near Cyprus does not contribute to de-escalation of tensions, but rather creates concern in Cyprus and the region. The ambassador mentioned that the presence of NATO military installations on the island does not guarantee the security of Cyprus, but rather constitutes a threat. He also expressed his satisfaction with the position of Cyprus, which does not participate in military operations in the region. Zyazikov stressed that Moscow supports political and diplomatic solutions to international crises and that the UN remains the only platform for equal dialogue. He also pointed out that developments are causing concern to many residents of Cyprus, including Russian citizens.
