European Parliament Services Clarify Funding Rules Amidst Feidias Panagiotou Controversy

Cyprus Times investigated the funding sources of MEPs and the regulations governing them, in the context of the allegations against Feidias Panagiotou. According to sources in the European Parliament's Legal Service, MEPs receive a salary, a general expenditure allowance for office and operating expenses, a daily attendance allowance (reduced if they do not participate in votes), and a budget for staff. The general expenditure allowance is intended for European Parliament use and not for personal or party activities, even if the MEP covers part of the expenses from their own resources. The 'fifty-fifty' practice mentioned by Feidias Panagiotou is not provided for in the regulations. Investigations into compliance with the regulations are underway by EPPO and OLAF.
