Russia Accused of Smuggling Migrants into Poland via Underground Tunnels

Russia is accused of being behind the channeling of thousands of migrants into Europe through underground tunnels from Belarus to Poland, in a move considered part of a hybrid war aimed at destabilizing the West. Polish authorities have identified four underground tunnels under the Poland-Belarus border in 2025, with the largest being 60 meters long and used by approximately 180 migrants, mainly from Pakistan and Afghanistan. Polish authorities claim that the Lukashenko regime is using experts from the Middle East to design and build the tunnels, with possible involvement of organizations such as the Islamic State, Hamas, or Hezbollah. Poland states that it can deal with the phenomenon by locating and destroying the tunnel entry points but expresses concern about the possibility of discovering new ones. The discovery of the tunnels comes at a time when Russia and its allies are accused of sabotage of infrastructure supplying aid to Ukraine. Poland has already built a 200-kilometer fence on the border with Belarus, equipped with cameras and sensors, to prevent illegal immigration. The Polish government believes that the construction of the tunnels proves the effectiveness of the security measures taken and emphasizes the need for close cooperation with the European Union to address illegal immigration and prevent hybrid threats.
