Russia vs Ukraine: From 'Fall of Kyiv in 3 Days' to an Exhaustive War of Attrition

Four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, the Russia-Ukraine war has turned into a protracted, exhausting war of attrition. The initial multi-pronged offensive – from the north, through Belarus, towards Kyiv, from the northeastern Russia-Ukraine border, from Crimea in the south and on the already ablaze front of Donbas in the east – aimed to ‘kneel’ Ukrainian defense. However, the rapid advance of Russian troops in the first weeks of the war, which raised fears of Kyiv’s fall in three days, was halted by the unexpectedly steadfast resistance of Ukrainians, demonstrating that the once mighty ‘Russian war machine’ had ‘rusted’. After four years of bloody clashes, fierce bombardments, and successive attacks, and despite the ambitious goals of Putin’s 'special military operation', Moscow has managed to seize approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory - including Crimea (which it annexed in 2014), almost all of Donbas (Donetsk and Luhansk) and large parts of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. The initial expectation of Russia for a quick victory has proven unfeasible, leading to a long and bloody conflict.
