Rubio: Trump Wishes 'Success' to Orbán in Elections

The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, concluded his European tour by expressing Donald Trump's support for the success of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the upcoming parliamentary elections on April 12th. Rubio stated that Trump is “deeply committed to your success” because the latter’s success is also seen as a success for the US due to their relationship. Viktor Orbán, who is trailing in the polls, argued that there is no reason to worry about the election outcome, stating that the government will be formed based on the will of the Hungarian people. He acknowledged that he may lose the election, but stressed that this is a common occurrence. Orbán faces a difficult challenge in the elections, as his party, Fidesz, is behind in the polls to the opposing TISZA formation. In a recent speech, Orbán attacked “pseudo-civil organizations, bought journalists, judges and politicians,” following a similar rhetoric to that of Trump. Rubio visited Budapest after meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava, another nationalist leader close to Trump. Rubio's visit signals US support for nationalist governments in Europe.
