Cypriot MEPs Address Cyprus Issue and EU Role

Cypriot MEPs, Lucas Fourlas and Michalis Hadjipanayiotou, addressed the Turkish occupation and the need for a resolution to the Cyprus issue with the EU's assistance, during their interventions at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Their statements followed the presentation of the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. Lucas Fourlas emphasized that Cyprus can serve as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East, expressing confidence that the country can meet the challenges and unite. He highlighted the importance of the right of veto and the need to uphold the common principles and values of the EU, even if they have not been applied in Cyprus for 51 years. Michalis Hadjipanayiotou described the continued division of Cyprus as an 'open wound' and a factor of instability for Europe, calling on the EU to demonstrate the same determination in Cyprus as it does in Ukraine. He expressed confidence that Cyprus can prove its capabilities during its Presidency. Both MEPs pledged to support efforts for the successful completion of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, prioritizing the defense of EU principles and values.
