Firing Squad Against the Government by Livestock Farmers: “Why did they rush to culling when there was room for deviations?”

Members of Parliament and agricultural organizations strongly criticized the government and Veterinary Services for the management of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. During the discussion in the House Agriculture Committee, inaction by the Ministry of Agriculture, the prioritization of mass culling over alternative solutions, and the questioning of the correctness of culling vaccinated animals were denounced. The committee chairman, Yannakis Gavriel, accused the Ministry of inaction, while other MPs spoke of “spasmodic decisions” and “animal killings”. Agricultural organizations demanded an immediate suspension of culling and universal vaccination, emphasizing the importance of protecting Cyprus's livestock capital. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, defended the management, emphasizing that it follows EU protocols and that she is in contact with the President of the European Commission for a possible exemption from mass culling due to the specificities of Cyprus. At the same time, the issue of criteria for evaluating teachers was discussed, with OELMEK emphasizing the importance of fair and objective evaluation to improve the quality of education.
