President of Cyprus Prioritizes EU-Latin America/Caribbean Relations

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized the importance of strengthening relations between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, describing the enhancement of these ties as a priority of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council. He stated this during the reception of the new Cuban Ambassador, Rubén Pino Martínez, at the Presidential Palace. President Christodoulides expressed Cyprus's appreciation for Cuba's consistent position on the Cyprus issue and its support for a fair and sustainable solution. Furthermore, the President stressed that Cyprus views its relations with Cuba as part of the broader EU-Cuba relations, noting that the EU remains Cuba's main trading partner and a significant provider of humanitarian aid. The EU-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement, which has been provisionally applied for nine years, provides the basis for structured cooperation and dialogue between the two sides, including issues related to human rights. The bilateral relations between Cyprus and Cuba have lasted for 65 years, with Cuba being one of the first countries to recognize the Republic of Cyprus. Over these decades, the two countries have developed strong ties in various fields, such as diplomacy, economy, culture, and education, through agreements and memoranda of understanding. The Cuban Ambassador, during the presentation of his credentials, referred to the long-standing friendship between the two countries and the support of the Cypriot people for Cuba, particularly in relation to the embargo imposed on his country for over six decades.
