President: Invitation to the Peace Council is Particularly Important

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, described both the invitation and Cyprus's participation in the upcoming meeting of the Peace Council for Gaza, under observer status, as particularly important. The invitation was issued by the US and allows Cyprus to participate in the meeting and present its specific plan for Gaza. President Christodoulides stressed that Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union and having contacts with leaders of Mediterranean EU states, can make a substantial contribution to finding solutions to the crisis in Gaza. This participation serves the interests of Cyprus, among other things. The President stated that he or the Minister of Foreign Affairs will attend the meeting and is in contact with other state leaders to finalize the final decision. In addition, he mentioned that Italy has already responded positively to the invitation. Asked about the observer status, the President explained that this relates to two issues: strengthening the effort for Gaza and the provisions of the US President’s Peace Council. Cyprus had not participated in the Davos meeting and had not signed related agreements, but the invitation from the US with observer status is an indication of recognition of Cyprus's contribution.
