President Highlights Partner Solidarity for Cyprus Talks

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized the importance of partner solidarity, such as from Spain, in the effort to restart substantial negotiations on the Cyprus issue. The negotiations aim for a lasting and viable solution, based on a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, in accordance with the UN framework and EU values. The statement was made during the presentation of the credentials of the new Spanish Ambassador to Cyprus, Mercedes Alonso Frayle. President Christodoulides assured the Ambassador that the government is committed to further strengthening bilateral relations in all areas. He stressed that Cyprus and Spain, despite their geographical distance, share strategic visions. Their cooperation, through the MED9 framework, promotes a stronger European response to common challenges. He also referred to the connection between the two countries through the 'Mare Nostrum', emphasizing their joint responsibility for promoting stability, dialogue and cooperation. The frequency of high-level visits, such as the recent visit of the Spanish Prime Minister to Cyprus and the Cypriot President’s visit to Madrid, demonstrates the political will of both sides. The upcoming year 2027, with the visit of King Felipe VI to Cyprus and the celebration of 60 years of diplomatic relations, is expected to be a historic milestone. Additionally, President Christodoulides stressed Cyprus' willingness to further deepen cooperation in areas such as defense and security, aerial firefighting and search and rescue.
