President on Cyprus: Let's Prove Our Readiness in Practice

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, reiterated his readiness to participate in an expanded conference, even next week, with the aim of restarting negotiations on the Cyprus issue, from where they left off in Crans Montana, with full respect for the negotiating record. The President called on all parties to demonstrate their readiness in practice. These statements were made on the sidelines of the celebratory commemoration of Saint Maronas in Nicosia, and followed reports concerning the readiness of leaders to move forward with the talks. President Christodoulides stressed that the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the upcoming parliamentary elections do not affect the timetable for resuming negotiations. The President expressed his disagreement with the statements of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin, who argued that internal procedures and elections make it difficult to restart talks, considering these arguments absurd. Reaffirming the readiness of the Greek Cypriot side, the President called on the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot sides to show similar willingness. In addition, the President referred to delays in crossing at Agios Dometios, noting that the Republic of Cyprus was ready for the road widening a long time ago.
