President Christodoulides: If Erhurman Believes Two-State Solution is the Answer, He Should Say So Publicly

President Nikos Christodoulides reiterated that his primary goal is to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue, from where they were interrupted in Crans Montana, utilizing the existing negotiating framework. He emphasized that neither the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU nor the Parliamentary Elections affect his readiness for talks. Referring to statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Erhan Arif, President Christodoulides said that if his position is a two-state solution, he should say so publicly, reminding that the joint statement of their meeting in December refers to UN Security Council resolutions for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. The President also expressed his dissatisfaction with the content of an article by Ms. Olguin, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, emphasizing that the Presidency of the Council of the EU and the Parliamentary Elections do not affect the process of resolving the Cyprus issue at all. Finally, President Christodoulides stated that contacts with the UN are ongoing and that he is fully prepared to attend an expanded conference on the Cyprus issue, as agreed.
