President: If Erhurman’s Position is Two-State Solution, He Should Say So Publicly

President Nikos Christodoulides is focused on restarting talks on the Cyprus issue, despite accusations from the Turkish Cypriot side and the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as the parliamentary elections. In statements, he expressed concern regarding the statements of the Turkish Cypriot leader and stressed that if his position is a two-state solution, he should announce it publicly. He recalled that the joint statement following his meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader in December specifically referred to UN Security Council resolutions on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation. He expressed his readiness to discuss the matter during the meeting on February 24. President Christodoulides stated that there was no dissatisfaction with the content of Ms. Olgin's article, but simply a reporting of the facts that the Presidency of the Council of the EU and the parliamentary elections do not affect the process of solving the Cyprus issue. He reaffirmed that his goal is to restart negotiations from where they left off in Crans Montana, utilizing the negotiating acquis. He stressed that contacts with the UN and the EU are ongoing and assured that he remains focused on the goal of restarting talks. He wants to sit down in an expanded conference on the Cyprus issue, as had been agreed.
