Historical Memory as Guide for Political and Social Responsibility – Parliament President

The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, emphasized that historical memory is fundamental to political and social responsibility, speaking at the annual memorial service for police officer Andreas Christofidis, who fell in clashes in 1964. Ms. Demetriou stated that the state has a duty to stand responsibly alongside citizens, even in difficult times. She highlighted that in a world full of geopolitical upheavals and uncertainties, historical memory is not merely a reference to the past, but a necessity for building collective self-awareness and democratic resilience. The memory of heroes, such as Andreas Christofidis, must be transformed into a living guide for political and social decisions. The President of the House called on the state to honor heroes consistently with the values they served – protection of institutions, unity, responsibility and the rule of law. She pointed out that the state has a duty to preserve memory and turn it into a guide for action for the good of society and the homeland. She also emphasized the importance of prudence, careful consideration and taking responsibility in both domestic and foreign challenges. In international relations, legality and International Law must be the guiding principles, to ensure peace and the liberation of Cyprus. The President of the House warned of the negative consequences of short-sighted political choices.
