Priority is to Limit the Spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Stressed in the Agriculture Committee

The crisis facing Cypriot livestock farming due to outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease was discussed at the House Agriculture Committee. MPs called for immediate compensation for farmers and a suspension of installments for those affected. Dissatisfaction was expressed over the absence of the Minister of Agriculture from the meeting, as well as the lack of coordination with the Police. The situation was described as difficult, while farmers complained about the lack of psychological support and the urgent need for information on the management of contaminated milk. In addition, it was reported that the vaccines have been ordered, but their use will be decided by the experts expected to arrive in Cyprus. The Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, Yannakis Gavriel, described the crisis as the greatest risk ever faced by Cypriot livestock farming, emphasizing the need to limit the spread of the disease and quickly compensate farmers. The Director-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, assured that the state will support farmers financially and psychologically.
