Trump Launches 'Peace Council' with Focus on Gaza Reconstruction – Notable Absences

Donald Trump is hosting the inaugural session of the 'Peace Council' in Washington, with the aim of announcing funding strategies for the reconstruction of Gaza. Several member states are participating in the session, while Greece, Cyprus, and Italy are represented as observers. Europe appears divided, with the EU abstaining due to concerns about the Council's statutes, while Middle Eastern countries are actively involved. The main topic of discussion is the plan for the reconstruction of Gaza, with the US expected to allocate $5 billion for this purpose. In addition, the International Stabilization Force, which will police Gaza, will be discussed, according to the Trump administration's 20-point plan. The plan envisages a gradual ceasefire, disarmament of Hamas, and the creation of a technocratic government. The Peace Council was initially presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Jared Kushner presented his vision for the reconstruction of Gaza, including coastal resorts and high-rise buildings. The cost of reconstruction is estimated by the UN at $70 billion. Despite an invitation to 50 countries, only 26 have accepted to participate as founding members, while 14 countries have declined the invitation. The absence of major European powers, such as France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain, is noticeable, while China and Russia have not yet responded.
