Erhurman: Rotation Presidency Must Be Accepted First – Views on Christodoulides' New Proposal

Tufan Erhurman, following the trilateral meeting, stated that the desired developments have not been achieved in Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs). He emphasized the need to accept the principles of political equality and the rotating presidency from the outset, while characterizing President Christodoulides' new 5-point proposal as a reformulation of previous positions, without new elements. Erhurman proposed a new meeting of the leaders without the mediation of the UN, which was accepted. He reiterated that political equality requires acceptance of the rotating presidency, leaving the issue of terms of office open. He noted that Christodoulides' proposal on roadblocks was unacceptable from the start, but he respected it. Finally, he emphasized the will of the Turkish Cypriot people for a solution and the need to set a timetable for the negotiations.
