Bill Proposed to Combat Taxi Piracy in Transport Committee – 'Huge Step'

The House Transport Committee approved a bill to combat taxi piracy, which includes a significant increase in fines, suspension of professional and personal driving licenses, as well as the seizure or immobilization of vehicles involved in illegal activities. The Committee Chairman, Alekos Tryfonidis, described the proposal as a "huge step" in addressing the problem. The bill was submitted after consultations with the Minister of Transport, the Licensing Authority, and taxi professionals, and aims to more effectively regulate the industry and protect legitimate taxis. The Pan-Cypriot Confederation of Urban Taxi Drivers (POAT) expressed hope that the bill will be the solution to combat piracy. According to the proposal, fines for taxi piracy will be significantly increased, while offenders will face suspension of driving licenses and potential seizure of their vehicle. POAT recognized Mr. Tryfonidis' initiative and expressed satisfaction with the speed at which the bill was promoted.
