President Christodoulides: EU Presidency a National Mission and Priority

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized that the EU Presidency is a national mission and priority for Cyprus. He described the country's accession to the EU as the most important development in its history since 1960 and highlighted the importance of working towards a more autonomous European Union. President Christodoulides explained that the Cypriot Presidency differs from others due to the country's size, which allows it to move away from national agendas and focus on the European agenda, as well as its ability to act as an honest mediator. Furthermore, Cyprus's geographical location, close to the Middle East, and its experience as a member state under occupation, give it a unique perspective. Compared to 2012, Cyprus is no longer a country focused on just one issue (relations with Turkey). It has demonstrated its ability to promote a broader European agenda. Ukraine is one of the key priorities of the Presidency. The Christodoulides government has a clear orientation towards Europe and the West. The Presidency aims to strengthen Cyprus's European identity and promote the country's interests within the EU.
