Prountzos Proposes New Crossing Point at Kaimakli

The Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Prountzos, has proposed to the negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side, Menelaos Menelaou, the opening of a crossing point at Kaimakli as an alternative solution for vehicle passage, given the difficulties in opening a crossing at Mia Milia. This proposal was previously discussed with the "mayor" of occupied Nicosia, Mehmet Harmantzi. Mr. Prountzos emphasized that the Agios Ilarionos crossing in Kaimakli is technically easier, but does not abandon the effort to open Mia Milia. The need for an alternative crossing arises from the increasing pressure on the Agios Dometios crossing point, where huge delays are observed due to the limited number of operating booths and strict checks related to the integration into the Schengen Treaty. The decongestion of Agios Dometios is the main goal of the Kaimakli proposal. The Mayor reiterated that the priority remains the opening of Mia Milia, but believes it is important to consider alternative solutions to address the immediate need to improve traffic flow and avoid further problems for residents of the area. This proposal is part of a broader effort to find practical solutions to the problems of movement between the two communities and to facilitate communication and cooperation.
