Citizenship Case of Child from Mixed Marriage Advances to ECHR

The Akkor case, concerning the citizenship of a child from a mixed marriage of a Turkish Cypriot and a Turkish citizen, is progressing to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The case, previously dismissed by Cypriot courts, is supported by Turkish Cypriot trade unions as a pilot case for other similar applications. The Secretary-General of KTÖS stated that they received notification of the case moving to the next stage at the ECHR. He believes that the criteria used to deny citizenship to children of mixed marriages raise questions of discrimination. KTÖS is calling on those who have not submitted applications for Cypriot citizenship through the union to do so.
