Cyprus Road Deaths Rise: 45 Fatalities in 2025, Target of 28 by 2030

The number of fatal road accidents in Cyprus is alarmingly increasing, reaching 45 by the end of 2025. This represents a setback compared to previous years, which saw lower numbers of fatalities. Limassol recorded the highest number of deaths, with 15, followed by Nicosia (11) and Larnaca (9). A particularly worrying aspect is that motorcyclists constitute the largest proportion of victims, despite motorcycles accounting for a small percentage of the total vehicle fleet. Weekends and nighttime hours remain the most dangerous periods for road accidents. The Director of Traffic Police Headquarters, Charis Evripidou, states that measures taken, such as the speed camera system, have helped reduce certain offenses by car drivers, but the increase in motorcycle use, due to delivery services, has contributed to the rise in accidents. The increase in motorcycle accidents is paradoxical, given that the number of cars is much higher. Additionally, there is an increase in pedestrian fatalities. Authorities are investigating the causes of this increase and the role of the state in preventing and suppressing road accidents. The goal set is to reduce fatal road accidents to 28 by 2030. However, the recent increase in the number of deaths shows that more and more effective efforts are needed to achieve this goal. Road safety remains a significant problem in Cyprus, requiring continuous attention and action.
