Protection and Rights of Prisoners of War: AKEL Brings Their Requests to Parliament

The General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, met with a delegation from the Association of Prisoners of War 1974 to discuss issues faced by prisoners of war. The Association raised the need for accurate maintenance of the prisoners' registry and their inclusion in the reduced pricing of EAC. AKEL committed to bringing these requests to the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees to initiate solutions. The meeting took place in light of the absence of a structured support framework for those who experienced captivity in 1974, either as conscripts or civilians, for 52 years. AKEL assured that it consistently approaches issues raised by organizations of prisoners of war, victims, and disabled individuals. The Association of Prisoners of War 1974 was represented by President Vasos Christou, Secretary Kypros Yiannis, and Assistant Secretary Nikos Dimitriou. The discussion focused on the needs and challenges faced by prisoners of war and their families. AKEL's commitment to promote the requests to the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees signals an effort to resolve long-standing problems and provide substantial support to prisoners of war and their families.
