UK Remains Committed to Fair and Sustainable Cyprus Solution, Says Dowty

British Minister of State for Europe, Stephen Dowty, reaffirmed the UK government's commitment to a “fair and sustainable solution” to the Cyprus issue, responding to a letter from the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK. Dowty emphasized that resolving the Cyprus issue is the most effective way to address the consequences of the island’s division and referred to the “significant steps” achieved in last year’s expanded (5+1) meetings. However, he stressed that the resumption of substantial negotiations depends on the leaders of the two communities, while progress on confidence-building measures is crucial. He also referred to the recent visit of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Cyprus and the trilateral meeting of the leaders.
