Cyprus to Nominate Xeropotamos and Diarizos River Valleys for UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Status

A contract has been signed for the preparation of a nomination file to include the Xeropotamos and Diarizos River Valleys in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. The contract was signed by Andreas Grigoriou, Head of Administration of the Presidency and Director-General of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Nikos Drakonakis, Chairman of the Board and Managing Director of ETAM. The area to be nominated covers approximately 510 square kilometers and includes 32 communities, as well as the abandoned Turkish Cypriot settlements of Vretsia, Maronas, Souskiou and Foinikas. The project will last 18 months and will involve close cooperation with government and private entities, scientific organizations, and local communities. The aim is to create a comprehensive file that highlights the biological, ecological, historical, and human value of the area. A steering committee has been established to monitor the project, coordinated by the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare.
