Independent Social Support Agency to be Abolished: Responsibilities to be Transferred to Ministry of Finance

The Cypriot government is promoting a bill to abolish the Independent Social Support Agency, also known as the 'First Lady's Fund', and transfer its responsibilities to the Grants and Subsidies Service of the Ministry of Finance. This move is taking place amidst the discussion of two proposals in the House Institutions Committee, one from AKEL and one from DISY. DISY proposes strengthening the transparency and accountability of the Agency, with measures such as the publication of donations over €500 and the appointment of a President with integrity by the President of the Republic, who will not be the First Lady or a person connected to the President. AKEL, on the other hand, supports the abolition of the Agency, believing that it is a hotbed of collusion and corruption, and proposes transferring its responsibilities to the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation (CSCF).
