Warning Messages from Civil Defence to Three Communities Near Dhekelia Bases – “No Need for Panic or Concern – Everything is Normal”

Residents of Xylotymbou, Xylofagou and Ormideia received warning messages from the Civil Defence on their mobile phones. The messages were guiding and precautionary, aimed at informing citizens in case of emergency, but there is no reason for panic, according to Andreas Efthymiou-Souli, Deputy Director of Regional Departments of the Civil Defence of Larnaca and Famagusta. The President of the Xylofagou Community Council, Giorgos Ioulianos, stressed that panic should not prevail among citizens. The messages called on residents to move to Frenaros in case of need. The situation in the Dhekelia British Bases is normal and no incidents have been reported that cause concern. Mr. Ioulianos stated that approximately 60% of Xylofagou is within the British Bases and that the Community Council is taking measures to deal with potential emergencies. There are five shelters in the area, which are being inspected to ensure their accessibility and suitability. A slight increase in demand for products from supermarkets has been observed, as citizens prepare for possible developments. The authorities call on citizens to remain calm and be informed by official sources.
