EAC Warns of Scam: Don't Pay for Smart Meter Installation!

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is warning consumers about a new scam, where fraudsters are sending misleading messages to apartment residents asking for money for the installation of smart meters. The EAC emphasizes that it never charges citizens for replacing conventional meters with smart meters, as the cost is covered by the EAC itself and European funds. It also points out that the installation and maintenance of meters are exclusively the responsibility of the EAC and are not assigned to private electricians. Mass meter replacement work is announced in advance in the Mass Media and on the EAC website, and residents are notified at least 24 hours before the replacement. The EAC staff during work on customer premises use official vehicles with the EAC markings and carry official identification, which citizens can request to avoid deception. Messages sent by EAC operators never include requests for amounts of money or methods of payment. The EAC urges consumers to be particularly careful and not to respond to such messages, as they aim to fraudulently collect money.
