Warning Over 'Hidden' Door Handles in Vehicles

The Department of Road Transport (TOM) of Cyprus has issued a warning regarding potential safety risks associated with 'hidden' door handles in vehicles, which are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in electric cars such as Teslas. These handles, which do not protrude when the vehicle is off, are activated electronically or mechanically. The warning was issued following international incidents where such handles failed to operate correctly in emergency situations, such as accidents and fires, resulting in passengers being trapped. The TOM announcement is based on reports from international road safety authorities and European concerns about the insufficient assurance of the operation of electronically controlled doors in the event of an accident or power outage. No similar incidents have been reported in Cyprus, however, the warning is precautionary. The TOM recommends that owners of vehicles with such handles familiarize themselves with the exact method of using the manual release mechanism, identify the location of the manual releases, and inform all passengers about how the mechanism works. In addition, it is recommended to regularly check the battery and verify any recalls from the manufacturer. In the event of handle malfunction, the TOM advises against using the vehicle until it has been inspected and repaired. This warning aims to protect passengers and prevent accidents that may be caused by the malfunction of hidden handles.
