Road Transport Department Warns of 'Hidden' Car Door Handles

The Road Transport Department (RTD) in Cyprus is warning owners of vehicles with electronically controlled or 'hidden' door handles about the potential risk of being trapped in the event of an accident or fire. The warning was issued following reports of incidents abroad where doors failed to open due to malfunctions in the electronic mechanisms. International road safety organizations have pointed out that existing safety standards do not guarantee the reliable operation of these doors in emergencies, even in the event of a power outage. The RTD recommends that owners of such vehicles familiarize themselves with the manual release mechanism, as described in the vehicle's owner's manual, and inform all passengers about its operation. It also suggests regular battery checks, as the proper functioning of electronic handles depends on it. Furthermore, the RTD advises owners to check if their vehicle is subject to any recall by the manufacturer or through the EU Safety Gate. In case of malfunction, it is recommended to immediately stop using the vehicle until it is checked and repaired.
