Fuel Stations: The Need for Reform

The discussion surrounding fuel stations in Cyprus is at a critical juncture, as the energy transition and electric mobility are radically transforming their role. Fuel stations can no longer be treated simply as refueling points, but as energy stations, offering a wider range of services. The government has set ambitious goals for the development of electric mobility, calling on oil companies to contribute to the installation of electric vehicle chargers. However, the existing legal framework is outdated and limits the flexibility of fuel stations, hindering the development of new activities. The Federation of Employers & Industrialists (OEB) points out the absence of a modern regulatory framework, which causes legal uncertainty and limits the competitiveness of the sector. In most European countries, fuel stations have already evolved into multi-functional spaces, combining energy, small retail and services. Upgrading fuel stations is essential to adapt to the new needs of consumers and support the country's energy policy. The transition to electric mobility requires the creation of a complete service ecosystem, where drivers can make the most of the time charging their vehicles with additional services.
