President of Cyprus Calls for De-escalation in Middle East

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that the European Union should promote a de-escalation initiative in the Middle East, in cooperation with interested partners. He stressed that Cyprus, as a member state in close contact with the countries of the region, expects a message from the EU to limit tensions. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus remains safe and that life on the island continues normally, despite one incident at a British base. He expressed his gratitude for the immediate response of countries such as Greece, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, which offered support to Cyprus. Regarding Article 42.7 on mutual defense assistance, President Christodoulides explained that it was not activated, as Cyprus is not directly involved in the war, but the response of the countries gave substantial meaning to the article. He stressed the need for the EU to be ready to react immediately in the event of the activation of the article by a member state. He expressed particular gratitude for the response of Italy and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who supports the need for greater EU involvement in the region. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus does not feel weak, despite not being a member of NATO, and that it wishes to become a member.
