EU Council Approves Common List of Safe Countries and Asylum Revision

The EU Council has formally approved the creation of a pan-European list of 'safe countries of origin' and revised the concept of a 'safe third country'. These legislative initiatives aim to accelerate and harmonize asylum procedures across all EU member states, serving as key components of the new Migration and Asylum Pact. The common list of safe countries includes nations such as Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco, and Tunisia, while candidate EU countries are also considered safe unless they meet specific criteria related to armed conflicts, human rights violations, or high asylum approval rates. The revised concept of a 'safe third country' provides greater flexibility for member states to reject asylum applications, while member states retain the right to create their own national lists. The new provisions will come into effect on June 12, 2026.
